Why Dominica?

Home

Dominca is quickly becoming known as one of the two or three "hot spots" in the world for watching sperm whales (Moby Dick!!). Some of the sperm whales use the waters off Dominica as a year-round haven. The large, mature males, being the largest of the toothed whales and weighing up to 40 tons, migrate back to these waters during the late fall, winter and early spring months to meet the females and young males. It is during these months when we see the most 'socializing' amongst the animals. It is a site to behold. Incredibly large animals (30 - 50 feet in length), vocalizing, hanging in vertical positions, writhing their bodies together, in what appears to be an act of foreplay.

Then suddenly their behavior will change and the group will begin to travel. Then the site to look for is when the animal prepares for a deep, feeding dive and "flukes up", raising its tail completely out of the water, propelling the animal down into the depths. The sperm whale is able to make dives in excess of 7,000 feet and may stay down for close to an hour.

Not only do the sperm whales frequent the waters off of Dominica, but so do humpback whales, pilot whales, false killer whales and numerous species of dolphin. For the past couple years, numerous film crews from producers such as Discovery Channel and National Geographic have come to dominica to get footage on the whales, and have used Castaways as their base.

The staff at Castaways & Dive Castaways will help you set up your excursion directly from the hotel's private pier.
