Montserrat is a British Crown Colony, situated between Nevis and Guadeloupe - and used to be an easy 15-minute flight from Antigua before the pyroclastic flow from volcanic eruptions destroyed the airport. Travel to and from Montserrat is now only by sea ferry or helicopter.
Montserrat's name comes from Christopher Columbus, who was reminded by its rugged landscape - particularly its saw-toothed mountain range - of the Montserrat monastery in Spain. The emblem of Montserrat is the shamrock, in honour of its earliest European settlers, who were of Catholic-Irish stock - even today many families still bear Irish names. The island has a striking resemblance to Ireland in its scenic beauty too.
Unfortunately, Montserrat is still in the intemational news with the volcanic activity from Chance's Peak. It is to be hoped that everything settles down quietly very soon so that Montserrat can regain its usual tranquil reputation. The former Capital in the shadow of the volcano has been buried under the ash and boulders of the pyroclastic flows, so the centre of commerce has been shifted north for the moment.

Cost: $75 in Montserrat stamps.
Waiting period: Three working days to obtain Governor's marriage licence through the Department of Administration. Marriage application form is issued by Department of Administration.
Documents: Passports and birth certificates of both parties. Non-marriage certificate.
