New FAA Rule Bars Personal Use of Mobile Phones and Computers in Cockpit

No personal electronic devices, please. No personal electronic devices, please.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued a regulation that prohibits pilots from using mobile phones, tablets, or laptops for personal use while on duty.

The final rule, which was released Tuesday, goes into effect in two months.

The agency said that it “codifies existing FAA policies and procedures” and also complies with the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 that prohibits commercial flight crews from using such devices for personal reasons.

A 1981 “sterile cockpit” rule already barred pilots from engaging in “distracting behavior” during critical phrases of flight, such as take-off and landing, according to the FAA, and the agency has previously asked airlines to include such procedures in crew training programs.
