[USA] Missoula airport seeks grant to add nonstop flights

The Missoula International Airport is applying for a grant for nonstop flights to Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston.

The request comes after the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded a $750,000 grant to Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport last year. Bozeman also plans to use its grant to encourage airlines to provide nonstop flights.

Missoula's airport director said the grants help offset costs when airlines typically lose money initiating new flights, and they can lead to lower ticket prices.

"It adds more competition to the market and, of course, competition typically brings lower prices. So that's really what we're shooting for. It also give the people opportunities to connect easily to markets that they can't connect to easily today. Whether it's South America or the Caribbean or places like that," said Missoula Airport Director Cris Jensen.

If the grant comes through, it could be a couple of years before the flights are available.

Umm, err, what? Let me get this straight... would these be the same "government subsidies" which A4A had the DoT squash the toes of foreign airlines about?

And you say Bozerman got US$750,000 already - and from the DoT itself - for them to PAY airlines to serve their city?

I thought this was taboo in the USA. Or is this the usualAmerican "level playing field" or "fair play" that the A4A and the DoT are "stamping out" in the rest of the world as "not fair" to US carriers?

Something smells fishy... and it ain't fish.
