[Air Berlin] More Caribbean and Majorca flights
January 28, 2016

Germany’s second-largest airline had planned to launch four weekly services from its hub in North Rhine Westphalia to the Texan metropolis in May under a strategy of more long-haul routes. But bookings for the destination, which is the hub of Oneworld partner American Airlines, did not develop as planned, according to German media.

Instead, Air Berlin will add one extra weekly A330 flight each to Punta Cana and Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. This will give the airline two weekly flights to Puerto Plata and three to Punta Cana. Demand for the Caribbean has increased strongly on the German market in recent months.

This means that two long-haul frequencies are still open and the airline expects to decide on these routes in the next few days. Air Berlin had announced plans for four new long-haul destinations from Düsseldorf this summer: Boston, San Francisco, Dallas and Havana.

In parallel, Air Berlin said it will operate more flights from Düsseldorf to Majorca. It will do so by switching planes from Turkey and Egypt routes, according to German media.

CEO Stefan Pichler commented: "Air Berlin continues to expand its services to popular medium and long-haul tourist destinations. The demand for crisis-free destinations such as the Balearic Islands, the Canaries or the Caribbean increased sharply during recent weeks. We therefore intend to further increase capacity on flights to Mallorca in the forthcoming summer schedule. We continue to be a strong partner for Dusseldorf airport where our service levels remain as high as ever."
