Derby: “Curaçao needs an independent CCAA to regain category 1 status”
Tue, Dec 8th, 2015

The promised category 1 for the Curaçao Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA) has not been materialized. According to a statement from the CCAA Director, Oscar Derby earlier this year, this should have been the case in December this year.

“We are well on our way to regain our category 1 status for our aviation. But to reach that objective, we need to make sure that we have an independent civil aviation authority,” said Derby during the recent Aviation Day celebrations.

Curaçao has been fighting for some time now to regain the category 1 status it has lost in 2012 after an inspection from the American Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). According to the FAA, Curaçao does not comply with a number of safety criteria for this status. Since then the government has been dedicating attention and resources to this problem without any concrete result.

The government announced in 2013 that it will regain the status, but to no avail. Once again in 2014 the made the same announcement, but still no result. In May this year, Derby announced in parliament that in December this will be definitive. The CCAA Director even announced that the FAA will be in Curaçao in September to evaluate the process. Apparently, this did not take place and now December is here without any conclusion.

Derby indicated that he’s optimistic and that the CCAA is on the right path. He also said that last October various regulations have been adopted relating to safety. They have also approved a business plan for an autonomous aviation entity for the island. This independent entity is an important requirement for the category 1 status. This entity will grow from 13 to 39 employees. This will help to have a better view of the aviation processes, according to Derby.
