Cape Air Boosts Caribbean Capacity With Flights to Vieques

Despite the economy, seems someone is betting demand for Caribbean travel will stay strong. Consider Cape Air’s (Web site: www.flycapeair.com) decision to deploy extra airplanes to operate out of San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU).

“We are meeting the unprecedented demand for service by sending additional planes to the Caribbean,” says Dan Wolf, Cape Air founder and CEO.

That will make for 25 aircraft for the carrier’s Caribbean operation, “to meet the hourly schedule of flights between San Juan” the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands and Vieques, Puerto Rico (VQS), the carrier’s latest destination.

Cape Air lays claim to being the largest independent regional airline in the United States, and has operated out of San Juan for just over a decade. Wolf says the airline expects “to fly about 1,000 passengers daily between the islands this upcoming season, up 70 percent from last year.”

Those islands encompass a quartet of destinations immediately to the east of Puerto Rico’s main island. Cape Air flies from San Juan to Tortola (TOV), St. Thomas (STT), St. Croix (STX), and Vieques (VQS). On Puerto Rico’s main island, there are flights from San Juan to Ponce (PSE) and Mayaguez (MAZ).
