Caribbean Airlines Guyana-bound plane diverts due to flooded cabin

A Caribbean Airlines flight on Monday night from Toronto to Guyana had to make a diversion to New York after the cabin became flooded with water from the lavatory.

Flight BW607 departed Toronto’s Lester B. Pearson International Airport at 10:03 p.m. EST and was just under 2 hours into flight when the cabin became flooded forcing the pilot to turn the aircraft around.

According to Flight Aware, a global flight tracking application, the Boeing 737-800 was approximately 200 kilometers west-northwest of Bermuda when it diverted to New York’s JFK Airport. The aircraft landed New York at 1:33 a.m. EST where engineers rectified the problem.

Caribbean Airlines is currently the only carrier providing non-stop services between Guyana and Toronto. The planned 6 hour flight between Toronto and Georgetown was carrying about 70 passengers.

The aircraft has since departed New York and is on its way to Guyana.
