The Dominican Republic is one of the oldest societies and cultures in the Americas. It occupies two-thirds of the island of La Hispaniola, the second-largest island in the Caribbean, and it shares its only border in the West with Haiti. Every year, in February and August, it's Carnival time. Elaborate costumes and fabulous homed masks supply the colour, while the Merengue music sets the mood.
