![]() Edifice nouveau a l'Aeroport Le Lamentin. The new Lamentin Airport Terminal Building. |
Martinique was originally inhabited by the warrior Carib Indians, to whom the island was Madinina, or "Isle of Flowers". The island was named after St. Martin by Columbus. It has rugged volcanic mountains, surging rivers and thick tropical rain forests - characteristics similar to those of St. Lucia and Dominica, between which it lies. Its economy is closely interwoven with France, of which it is a Department. Among the capital's sights, the large public market is considered by many to be the highlight. The pungent aroma of Gauloise cigarettes creates an atmosphere of its own in the town's cafes and bars. Martinique's hotels are very diverse, and spread throughout the entire island. Some are large and stylish, some are small, charming and intimate. |
