Trinidad... |
Area Code (868) |
Trinidad is the most southerly of the Caribbean islands, lying just seven miles off the coast of Venezuela, to which it was once joined in the far distant past. Its sister island, Tobago, lying 21 miles away to the north-east, was hitched on to Trinidad by the British in 1899 to form a single state.
Port of Spain, the capital, is the largest city and main port. Its pride and joy is the big open park known as the Queen's Park Savannah.
Trinidad does not boast the best beaches in the Caribbean - though Maracas Bay, 14 miles from Port of Spain through the spectacular northern range, and the long empty miles of Manzanilla and Mayaro in the south-east, are well worth a trip - but it has plenty of other attractions; these range from the curious Pitch Lake at La Brea-an apparently inexhaustible bitumen lake, used nearly 400 years ago by Sir Walter Raleigh to caulk his ships - to nature and bird-watching centres like the Caroni Swamp and the Asa Wright Nature Centre.

About Tobago... |
Peace and Tranquillity... |
Trinidad prides itself on offering excitement. Tobago, on the other hand, means tranquillity - deserted beaches, with a particularly fine one at Pigeon Point near the airport, and endless calm, clear water.
The Buccoo Reef is one of the most accessible coral reefs in the Caribbean, with a fascinating underwater world. And there is a championship golf course at Mt. Irvine, where you can play a relaxing 18 holes under the shade of palm trees.
